On this page you will find information about our curriculum, schedule, and some basic school policies. Please read through the information carefully. If you have any questions about anything, feel free to email or call me.
Transportation - Any changes in your child's transportation schedule needs to go through the Primary School office. Also, if your child is at school before 7:50, he/she needs to wait by the office until the bell rings.
Security – For the safety of students and staff all visitors and parents must check in at the office when coming in the building. You will need to sign in and get a visitors badge from the secretary. Also, if you are picking up your child after school, please wait by the main doors for our class. During school hours, the school is locked and you will need to be buzzed in at the main entrance.
Clear Folders (V.I.P. Folders) - Most of you have your clear folder from last year. Those that do not have clear folders can purchase them from me or at the office once school has started. The cost for a folder is $1.00. It is very important that these folders come to school with your child EVERYDAY. It is also very important for you to go through your child's folder every night.
Headphones - If you need to purchase headphones, please send in $4.00. Headphones are used for use with iPads, computers, and listening centers.
Lunch money - You may send lunch money in at anytime with your child. I will make sure it gets to the office. Please have it labeled and in a sealed envelope.
Reading - Reading is the basis of our day. The three block framework, consisting of language and word study, reading workshop and writing workshop, is a conceptual tool for organizing instruction. The framework is flexible, allowing numerous variations in content, student groupings, daily time frames, and the level of teacher-directed instruction. Students will be bringing home their blue Kiwi pack (also known as Bulldog Bags) every day. Please practice these books daily at home. The Bulldogs Bags will not begin coming home until sometime in October.
Math - Everyday Mathematics is a math program that requires hands-on activities as well as partner and individual work. Games (explorations) are used to teach basic math skills, such as addition. The homework piece is called a "homelink." Look for these to come home in your child's clear folder. Please return them when they are completed. The purpose of a homelink is for parents to assist their child with learning (they are not intended for the child to complete independently), and observe what is being taught in math. A written math assessment will be given at the end of each unit. This is a representation of progress made at school. Grades are based on partner work, individual work, classroom observation, and math assessments.
Speak Up - This is a part of our language arts program and is a structured version of "show and tell." Each week there will be a blue half sheet of paper sent in your child's clear folder. This sheet will tell your child what to bring to school, and ask three short questions about that object. Parents please fill out the form for your child, but the form must be returned to school on our Speak Up day so that I can assist your child if needed. Please have your child practice presenting several times before the Speak Up day. During Speak Up the students will work on voice, posture, eye contact, and speaking in complete sentences. I would appreciate it if Speak Up items are brought on the day of Speak up (usually Fridays). We simply do not have the space in our classroom to store items brought in early.
Physical Education – The students will have gym 4 times per week. Please make sure they have tennis shoes at school everyday.
